Visa’s IPO?

Elly asks:
Hey guys, I just had a question regarding Visa’s IPO price. It priced at $44 a share last Wednesday. However, the price that an individual investor could buy it for started at like $58 a share. Why is that? Do others(mutual fund companies, millionnaire investors) get first dibs? I’m confused about that. Also, one other question if I may. What is this premarket and aftermarket trading stuff? I thought stocks could only be purchased during the market hours. I’d appreciate info. Thanks guys!

The answers to your Qs are at the end of the remarks I originally posted.
IPO: initial public offering. Its the first time a stock is offered for purchase to the generakl public.

As you are doing research about the investments you are interested in, sometimes you’ll come across a financial or investment term you never heard before.. You can usually find excellent, easy-to-understand definitions of many financial and investment terms by going to Investopedia’s dictionary.
It probably won’t be long when you’ll feel you’re ready to invest your hard-earned money. Before taking that step, you really should do research about what you are investing in. It also has a free, paper trading platform. You can set up a virtual account and almost trade as though you were trading with real money.

If you want examples:
A] Go to the yahoo finance site.
B] Under the “HOME” tab is a blank box. Begin typing the symbol or the company’s name. As you are typing a drop down menu will appear with symbols.
C] When finished click on the “GET QUOTE” button. The quote for that stock should be displayed.
D] On the left side is a blue box. The 3rd line down is “Options”. Click on that.
IF that company has options, the option chains will be displayed. Not all companies have options. In fact I don’t think there are too many companies under $5 which have options.
To answer your Qs: Why is that? Supply and Demand. The HYPE was so hot and heavy, just about every one wanted it. [Present answerer and about 90 others I know of weren't interested - one way or another.]
Do others(mutual fund companies, millionnaire investors) get first dibs? I haven’t heard of that. I DO KNOW Visa’s esecutives have the opportunity first.
What is this premarket and aftermarket trading stuff? Some brokers do it and allow it, while others don’t participate. Usually its additional trading by “THE Big Boys”. Check with your broker.
Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!
