An “initial public offering” is a way for a corporation to obtain large amounts of working capital (money invested) by offering shares of its stock to the public. This is a very complicated process involving private shareholders (and those holding options to buy shares), new investors, investment bankers, attorneys, accountants, brokerages, a selected stock exchange, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the state securities commission, and a whole lot of analysts who would love to get in on it.
